Cool down this summer in a local library

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is encouraging residents in the city to stay cool this summer at a Council Library.

Local Councillor Norm Wyndham (McDowall Ward) said said an abundance of activities and entertainment was scheduled at Brisbane City Council’s air conditioned libraries from Saturday 12 December to Sunday 24 January to help bust that holiday boredom and keep cool.

“A range of activities including a live performance by Red Rocket 3, writing workshops and cartoon drawing will be on offer for the whole family to enjoy,” Cr Wyndham said.

“Our libraries are much-loved community hubs, with a fantastic range of facilities available for the school break as well, such as iPads, computers, and free Wi-Fi access.”

“These activities are a great way to engage kids while also encouraging education and learning in a fun environment.

Cr Wyndham said Council’s 33 libraries across the city were fun, affordable and safe options.

“Our libraries are a great place to find a range of events, classes, workshops and activities all year round, but particularly during summer and the school holidays,” Cr Wyndham said.

“We encourage literacy from a very young age, with our libraries hosting hundreds of events throughout the year such as our babies, books and rhymes sessions, toddler time and children’s story time.

“Our libraries are a wonderful space for residents to meet, borrow items, enjoy classes and workshops and these events are just another way we are delivering world class library services.

During the 2014/15 financial year, Council’s 33 libraries were visited more than 6 million times with customers borrowing over 9 million items.
