Brisbane homes to get free energy audit
20 January, 2009
Brisbane residents can get the $50 ClimateSmart Home Service energy audit for nothing, under a new Brisbane City Council Green Heart CitySmart rebate scheme.
Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said the aim of the rebate was to encourage more Brisbane residents to take part in the ClimateSmart initiative.
He said the Queensland Government’s ClimateSmart home energy audit would not cost Brisbane homeowners a cent, with Council reimbursing people the cost in full.
“We’re showing our commitment to saving Brisbane by being the only Council in South East Queensland to offer the rebate,” Cr Newman said.
“The rebate is open to every household across Brisbane, including rental properties.”
The Lord Mayor urged households to take full advantage of the rebate and audit to reduce the city’s energy and water, and increase sustainability.
The $150m Green Heart CitySmart is Brisbane’s largest environmental program and includes planting two million trees, purchasing at risk bushland and increasing the city’s green cover to 40 per cent.
“The aim of my Green Heart CitySmart campaign is to help people save Brisbane’s environment through simple, daily and cost-effective ways household by household, street by street, and suburb by suburb,” the Lord Mayor said.
As part of the service, a licensed electrician will install an energy monitor, a water-efficient shower head, and up to 15 energy efficient light bulbs (CFLs), by appointment.
After the audit has been completed a customised Energy and Water efficiency plan will be mailed to residents.
Residents pay for the State Government service upfront and then claim the Green Heart CitySmart rebate from Council.
